New Years Satwa walkabout Jan 9 '09
10th January 2009
Happy New Year! Like a good Redwood we've all just gained another ring- let's hope this one doesn't scar so bad. I'm out here still trying to catch up to the rest of my life & falling behind badly as usual, especially with the website. No better time than now to revive it me thinks, so here goes..
I took an early morning stroll through the characteristic suburb of Satwa. This historic area of 'old Dubai' is earmarked for demolition, to make way for a 350 BILLION Dirham (approx 95 billion US $) new project. The developers are considering building a 2.4km high tower here, which is approx 3 times the height of the current highest, the Burj Dubai. It would have 400 storeys with each set of 100 storeys forming a “neighbourhood” and a Sky Plaza operating as a “town centre”. A vertical bullet train would ferry people from one “neighbourhood” to another. (Google the new project called 'Meraas', only in Dubai..)
Anyway the evacuation & demolition has started and I've always wanted to go for an early morning shoot before the bulldozers flatten the remaining 2/3rds of Satwa. A few of these images are up in the 'What's new' section.
